13th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL MARIACHI FESTIVAL

We really enjoy mariachi music. In San Diego we encounter mariachi
groups of various levels of ability in some of the Mexican restaurants.
Usually there are three, or maybe five musicians. They play the more
common ranch music, such as El Rey, La Cucaracha, or Cielito Lindo. Pam
enjoys singing along when she knows the lyrics. (I have noticed the band plays
louder when she sings, but maybe that’s just my imagination.)
A few years ago we watched a PBS fund-raising special about the
International Mariachi Festival
that is held each year in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. From that program
we learned that there is much more to mariachi than a couple of strolling
musicians in a restaurant, and we decided we would go to the festival one year.
Well, this is the year. Through
SkyAuction.com we were able to obtain an apartment for the week for $250,
and airfare from Tijuana is reasonable. We can't resist an opportunity
like that.
We have been to Guadalajara a few times before, but there is always something else to see. This trip, in addition to the Mariachi Festival, we decided to visit Lake Chapala and hit the market in Tonolá as well as spending time in the city.
