Feeling a need to decompress from our arduous transatlantic cruise, we were
happy to accept an offer from our friends Rich and Shirley to join them for a
few days in Cabo San Lucas, BCS.
The trip was courtesy of one of Rich’s business suppliers, U.S. Airconditioning.
Four free nights at the all-inclusive Dreams Resort. Who could possibly
resist!
San Jose del
Cabo, location of the area’s airport, is only a two-hour flight from San Diego.
We elected to fly Aeromexico as they had the cheapest fare. As it turned
out, there were one or two other benefits compared to the US airlines. We
had reserved an aisle and window seat as usual, and the center seat was not
filled, so we had plenty of room. Though the flight was only two hours, we
were served breakfast with complimentary champagne.
Our
arrival was uneventful. We picked up our rental car and had only a short
wait for Rich and Shirley’s flight from San Francisco (via Los Angeles).
Then we had our first challenge. Four people with luggage including a
(large)
golf bag to fit in a small Chevy. We soon found that the golf bag required
priority seating, in the front. The other three passengers managed to
squeeze into the back seat. A half-hour ride later, we arrived at the
Dreams Resort.
Check in was
pre-arranged, so it was time for lunch and a margarita (not necessarily in that
order). We had the rest of the afternoon to wander around the hotel and
check out the five restaurants.
It didn’t take long to locate the margaritas.
There were several bars to choose from, and all of them were able to provide
quality drinks.
The stay was kicked off the first evening with a group dinner, one of the two
scheduled dinners (i.e., first night, last night). From then on we were
pretty much left on our own.
Pam has been
raving for years about this fantastic hotel in Cabo called “La
Finisterra”, with its cliff-side rooms and wonderful view of the beach. We
just had to go see it.
Well, we found
the hotel with a very nice cocktail lounge, and the rooms are still on the cliff
side. However, the view of the beach has morphed into a view of
another hotel. (See picture to the left.)
We decided all we could do was have another margarita.
On
our second day, we had an opportunity to take a ride on a catamaran and go
snorkelling. It was a very nice boat, well stocked with beer, wine,
margarita, etc. Rich
was the only one of our group to go in the water (it was pretty cold). The
rest of us managed to keep wet on the inside and dry on the outside.
Very nice views of the rocks and arches at the cape.
The boat
landing is adjacent to a shopping mall. We had to rush through to catch
our bus, so the ladies didn’t have an opportunity to shop (darn!). We did
chance on one of the local denizens, an alligator just climbing out of a
manhole.
Rich wasn’t able to hook up with a foursome for golf, so he wrestled those clubs
all the way down from San Francisco for nothing. We helped console him
with some margaritas.
We really
worked at finding ways to relax. Pam was quite successful. Those
empty glasses on the table in the photo to the left are all hers.
Our
final day we drove through San Jose del Cabo, looked at some souvenirs, and then
dropped Shirley and Rich off at the airport. Pam and I had a few hours
before our flight, so we returned to San Jose, found a rooftop restaurant, and
enjoyed a hamburger with a couple of Coronas. We soon had to leave and
return to San Diego and work.
Oops, I keep forgetting, we’re retired now!
